Dear
Today Environment Minister Tony Burke released his draft plan for the Coral Sea. And now it’s your turn to let him know what you think.
So here’s a brief wrap of the plan:
It proposes the largest protected area in the world – almost a million square kilometers - but various forms of fishing are still allowed in 49% of it. And that 49% contains most of the species-rich coral reefs – the jewels of the Coral Sea – and vital breeding sites for threatened tropical tunas.
Only 2 out of 25 reefs in the Coral Sea are properly protected!
How can you protect the Coral Sea without protecting the corals?
It’s by no means all bad. Your letters over the last three years have definitely had an effect.
Oil and gas exploration and seafloor trawling are banned throughout the entire area. Long line fishing - a threat to turtles and seabirds – is banned in three quarters of the park.
We believe the Minister is heading in the right direction. With your support, he can finish the job properly.
Send him your comments now.
Be part of the tide of submissions calling for an expansion of the marine national park to include all the coral reefs and the vital breeding sites of our ocean giants.
Please Act Now! Send a submission to Environment Minister Tony Burke. It will take you less than 20 seconds!
